Am I legally entitled to an English interpreter at my IMT theory exam?

Yes. Portuguese law (Decreto-Lei 44/2005 and IMT regulations) grants foreign nationals the right to an approved oral translator for the theory examination. The translator is present in the room and provides real-time oral translation.

Does the translator translate the questions for me during the exam?

Yes. The translator reads and translates each question and all answer options aloud to you in English. Your answers are then relayed back. The translator does not answer for you — they only translate.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking at least 5 working days before your exam date to ensure a translator can be confirmed. Peak periods (January–March and September–November) may require more notice.

Which IMT examination centres do you cover?

All IMT-certified examination centres across mainland Portugal and the islands (Madeira and Azores). This includes all major cities and smaller regional centres.

What if my exam is cancelled or rescheduled?
